Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Lesson Plan
does it Make a difference?
Quick summary: Students will engage in an interactive project to see if
physical activity, sleep habits and/or eating healthy can affect math test
scores.
How long will it take: Two 30 minute lessons
What do I need: A short test of varied math problems created by the teacher.
The test can be generated at
Student Worksheets for Physical Activity Log, Sleep Log, and Fruit and
Vegetable Consumption
(Pages 8-10 in Worksheet Booklet in pocket)
How does it work:
During the first lesson, students will complete a 5 minute pre-test of varied
math problems. The teacher will then select one health habit (physical
activity, sleep habits or fruit and vegetable consumption) as a variable for the
students.
Teacher will ask students to complete a three-day recall of the selected
health habit. Teach students some of the key points about the selected
variable (either physical activity, healthy eating or sleep, including the
recommendation for each health habit).
Students will then track the selected health habit for one week, striving to
meet the recommendation of the health habit:
60 minutes of physical activity daily;
about 9 hours of sleep per night;
about 1.5 – 2 cups of fruit and 2.5 – 3 cups of vegetables per day;
based on caloric requirements.
Students will calculate the daily average for both the three day recall and
one week. For the post-test, administer the same math test one week later
and score.
Instruct students to chart the difference between the tests to see if focusing
on a healthy behavior had a positive impact on his/her test scores. Move
on to the next variable the following week. Repeat lesson until all three
variables have been tested. Students can chart and determine which variable
had the biggest impact on their test scores.
