DEMONSTRATION SPEECH
A Demonstration speech is written to explain and show people how to do something. This might involve
using various types of visual aids, or handout to ensure the effectiveness of the instructions.
The main elements to writing a successful and effective Demonstration speech are to convey clear
instructions to enable a person to effectively and safely complete a task. It might also centre around
information regarding a process a 'How to' speech e.g. How to boil an egg:
TIME LIMIT: 7-10 minutes
VISUAL AIDS: minimum of 4… but no limit.
DRESS: DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR THE DEMONSTRATION!
General Purpose: To Demonstrate
Specific Purpose: Determine the specific purpose of your speech topics. State it in one simple
sentence. For example: I want to demonstrate how to ……
ORGANIZATION OF THE SPEECH:

Introduction
 Motivate your audience by getting their attention.
 State the purpose of your speech… what you are going to teach them.
 Preview the main points…. No need to list the steps, just give a general idea of what is to come
 Give the audience a reason to listen...a use that might apply to them
Body
State your background with this skill (when did you learn it and why your chose it)
Give some factual information (history of the skill, or popularity of it)
Instructions - Providing clear and concise instructions on how to complete a task
Task Breakdown - The task must be broken down in a logical format, step by step
 Key Points - Key points must be emphasized including any safety issues
Conclusion
Restate your purpose.
Tell us the value in knowing this skill.
ADDITIONAL PREPARATION
 Gather the “props” you will need. These are your visual aids.
 You may use one note card when you speak (it will not be turned in).
 Practice “doing” your speech at least 3x, timing it to be sure it fits into the time limit.
