a. Read, write decimals to 1000s using base-ten numbers, number names and
expanded form e.g. 347.392 = 3 x 100 + 4 x 10 + 7 x 1 + 3 x

b. Compare 2 decimals to thousands based on meaning of the digits in each
place using , , = symbols to record the results in comparisons.
Use one nine sided die (0-9) or cards numbered 0-9 for this activity. Numbers can
be recorded to hundredths or thousandths place depending on student ability.

Beginning in round 1 the teacher tells the class that he/she will toss the die/ select
a card 6(5) times in each round. Students are asked to randomly record each
number into one of the 6 (5) place values. After completing the round, each
student will then write this number in expanded form.
Round 2, the teacher will asked the students to try to make a number that is as
large as possible by placing the number of the tossed die /select a card in a place
value that will generate the largest number possible. Students will then write this
number in expanded form.
The teacher will ask students to share the strategies they used to complete this last
round to generate the largest number possible.
