4. Important Vocabulary Terms:
Northwest Passage-
Waterway in North America thought to connect the Atlantic & Pacific
Oceans to reach Asia (the Indies) (Europeans thought this would be a safer, faster way to travel.)
Silk Road-
The main trade route by land to Asia (the Indies)
Columbian Exchange-
Widespread exchange of animals, plants, culture, human populations
(including slaves), disease, technology and ideas between the Native Americans and Europe
following Christopher Columbus’s voyage in 1492
Exploration-
Traveling in or through an unfamiliar area in order to investigate it (learn)
Latitude-
The distance in degrees north or south of the equator (Ladder-tude)
Longitude-
The distance in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian
Obstacle-
Anything that interferes with reaching a goal
Opportunity Cost-
The thing you give up to obtain a goal is an opportunity cost (Explorers
gave up time with family, etc for riches & fame) You will give up your tickets in exchange for
an ice cream sundae. The opportunity cost is your tickets.
Technology-
Scientific knowledge and tools used to achieve a goal or solve a problem
(Some technology at that time: maps, compasses, printing press, astrolabe)
