SER and ESTAR both mean TO BE in English. So how do you know which one to
use?
SER is often used for more permanent or stable characteristics, such as:
- Origin & Nationality
- Physical Traits
- Personality Traits
ESTAR is often used for more temporary conditions, such as:
- Feelings & Emotions
- Location
How you feel and where you are is when you use the verb “estar.”
What you’re like and where you’re from is when you use the other one.
Examples:
I am sad.
Yo estoy triste.
Feelings = Estar
I am tall.
Yo soy alto.
Physical Characteristics = Ser
He is in Spanish class.
Él está en la clase de español.
Location = Estar
He is from Spain.
Él es de España.
Origin = Ser
