Since one or both of the parties is Catholic, that party/those parties was/were obliged to marry
according to the manner prescribed by the Catholic Church. Since that manner of marrying was not
followed, when the marriage vows were previously spoken, the previous exchange of vows did not
create a marriage at all. Understanding this and recognizing that I am not therefore presently
married, I hereby declare that I am now marrying my intended spouse and commit myself to
marriage, which will be a permanent and exclusive relationship. Furthermore, I commit myself to a
marriage that will be ordered to the procreation and education of offspring and the good of the
spouses. I give my consent freely, having placed no conditions upon it, and only after mature
deliberation concerning the rights and duties of the matrimonial covenant and my ability to fulfill
them.
(If the marriage involves a non-Catholic, a Sanatio in Radice may be an option if the non-Catholic spouse is unable to sign
this statement of intent.)
