Introduction: The scientific method is something we use very often without being aware of it. This method
is a way of approaching problems in an organized way. Below are the basic steps of the scientific method:
1. Question: identify a problem and ask a question that aims to find
the answer.
2. Do Background Research/Observations: before you can start
solving the problem or finding answers you should see what else is out
there. This can be in the form of observations or research of
previously conducted experiments.
3. Construct a Hypothesis: This is an educated guess about the
answer to your question based on observations/research.
4. Test with an experiment: a procedure designed to test the
hypothesis
5. Collect and Analyze Results: collect, record, and analyze
quantitative (numerical) and qualitative (descriptive) data.
6. Draw conclusion: analysis of the experiment and discussion about whether or not the results support the
original hypothesis. Repeat, repeat, repeat-replicate you work to ensure the validity of your results.
7. Hypothesis was TRUE: report your results! Hypothesis was FALSE (or partially true): publish you
results anyway! This helps the scientific community. Then think again and try a new experiment
Background: Today we will conduct an experiment and make detailed observations. The steps of the scientific
method will guide our work. This investigation will test different qualities of milk to see their reaction when
food coloring and dish shop are added. We will observe and record the different reactions of the different milk
types
Materials:
Petri dishes
dish soap
whole milk
Food coloring
eye dropper
2% milk
1% milk
Scientific Method:
1. Ask a question:
_________________________________________________________________________________
2. Research/Preliminary Observations
a. Name one thing milk, food coloring, and dish soap have in common:____________________________
b. Give you best definition of density
Experimental Design
