Regular –ir Verbs
To form the preterite of regular –ir verbs, drop the ending and add these endings:

2. Verbs ending in –car /-gar /-zar
If a verb ends in –car, -gar, or –zar, we still use the normal –ar endings, but the stem will change in the

-car – drop the –ar, change the c to a _______.

-gar – drop the –ar, change the g to a _______.

3. Verbs that end in a vowel + -er/-ir - Check your notes
If you have an –er or an –ir verb whose stem ends in a vowel, you have to add accent marks and make
spelling changes (y) in order to preserve the pronunciation.
