Part I
1. Know what events and conflicts were tearing the nation apart in the years prior to
the Civil War.
2. Understand how the Underground Railroad, slavery, Dred Scott, abolitionism,
John Brown, and Bleeding Kansas moved the nation closer to war.
3. What impact did the presidential election of 1860 have on the northern and
southern states? Think South Carolina.
4. Know which states were Union, Confederate, and Border states.
5. What made the border states special?
6. Know the capital cities and the presidents of the two sides.
7. Be familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of the two sides.

8. Know the definitions of the vocabulary words in the chapter.
9. Understand and be able to state why the southern states felt the need to form their
own nation.
10. Understand and be able to state why the Union initially started fighting in the war.
11. Be able to explain Lincoln’s plan to bring the issue of slavery into the war and his
reasons for doing so. Explain the significance of the Emancipation Proclamation.
12. Be familiar with the Battle Chart notes taken in class. Many test questions are
generated from the information found on the chart.
13. What was the Army of the Potomac and who led it? The order is important.
14. What was the Army of Northern Virginia and who led it?

15. Understand that Gettysburg and Vicksburg marked significant turning points in
the war for the Union. Be able to discuss why they were turning points. What was
happening in the war up until those battles?

17. How did women contribute during the war period? Who was Clara Barton?
18. The Union and Confederates did not always refer to the same battle by the same
name. How can you tell the difference?
19. Describe the events surrounding Lee’s surrender.
20. What was the famous “March to the Sea?”
21. Explain the events surrounding Lincoln’s assassination.
