CONCLUSION QUESTIONS
Part 1- Density of a Liquid:
1. Compare your average density value to the slope of your mass vs. volume graph. Are
they close? Should they be? What does the slope of a mass vs. volume graph represent?
The average density values are equal to that of the slope because they should be the same.
Density is mass/volume or is the rise over run or y/x. The slope represents density.
2. For analytical work, a minimum of three trials are required. Why do you think this is
necessary?
Three trials are necessary in experimentation to get accurate and consistent results.
Part 2 – Density of a solid:
1. Why did you measure the mass of the solid first then determine the volume?
In this experiment the mass must be measured first because to determine volume water
displacement is what is being measured. The object would then have an added mass from
the water if calculations of mass occurred after volume calculations.
2. Can the water displacement method be used for all solids? Why or why not?
Water displacement method to determine volume of a solid can’t be used for all solids.
The reason for this is some solids will float on the water. Therefore the object’s density is
less dense than the water.
3. Some of you choose to use a penny as your “solid object” in Part 2 of this procedure.
Some decided to use multiple pennies. What experimental values change when the
numbers of pennies change? What (if any) experimental values do not change? Discuss.
Since pennies are used there will be different particles that will attach themselves to the
pennies; which will influence changes in your results. The more pennies used the more
