EXTENDED RESPONSE: (9-11) If you were going to climb Mt. Everest later
this spring, what would you be most concerned or worried about?
Why?
You must be in great shape to climb Everest. A normal person would die within
minutes if flown from sea level to the summit. So, I would be concerned about
working out and being in great physical shape for the climb.
I am concerned about the Khumbu ice fall because of all the hidden crevasses.
I would stay very close to an experienced climber while climbing thru the ice fall.
It is said that all climbers must be off the summit at 12 noon. I would make a rule
that wherever you are at noon, you must turn around and head back down the
mountain. Even if you are 100 yds from the summit at noon, you must turn around.

EXTENDED RESPONSE: (21-23) Near the top of Mt. Everest are rocks that formed on the ocean floor.
Tell how Mt. Everest formed, and explain how ocean rocks got on top of the highest point of planet Earth!
Long ago, India was a small separate continent. It’s position was far to the south of where it is today.
The great Himalaya mts. were formed when India moved northward and collided with southern Asia.
Rocks and sediments from the ocean floor were trapped in between India and southern Asia and, as a result,
were pushed upward to the top of the world. That is why we find limestone strata (sea floor rock) with fossil
fishes near the summit of Everest. In addition, even today Mt. Everest is growing still higher as the collision
between India and S. Asia continues. As long as this collision continues, the summit of Everest will continue
to get higher and higher.
