Writing Assignment Overview
MMW122 - Summer 2015
During this summer session you will write an original 7-8 page research paper. The writing
assignments for MMW122 draw on the analytical, research, and writing skills taught in MMW121.

Use your research and writing reference books (Easy Writer, 5
edition, EW; A Writer’s Reference,
WR) to help you to:
Select a topic relevant to the historical period 1750CE to present (WR, 358-359).
Read many scholarly sources on the topic (See “Sources for Research Papers handout for
program expectations on sources, WR, 73-76-385 or EW, 35-38)
Develop an open-ended, level-three question about your research topic (WR, 359-362, or EW)
Identify alternative hypotheses (and the evidence that supports them) that answer your
question (WR, 97-98; 105-106)
Select, from among those hypotheses, what you believe to be the strongest of the answers to
your question (your thesis) (WR, 106-110)
Develop an argument based on your thesis and supported with evidence from your sources
(WR, 103-105; EW 39-44)
Discuss the significance of your topic and of your thesis (in better explaining your topic)
Please remember that it is a violation of the UCSD Policy on Integrity of Scholarship to submit
material for which you have already received credit in another class, unless you have permission
from your TA or professor to do so. This must be new work.
RESEARCH
You should get started on your research right away because you have only two weeks to submit a
prospectus outlining your research project. During Week 1, you should search for and request
scholarly books and articles that you can begin reading by the first weekend of summer session.
What about US-related topics?
If you choose to write about the US, your paper must meet the following criteria:
a. You may write on US and the World – if the paper involves the US, the main action takes
place in another geographical region outside US borders.
b. If the main action takes place in the United States, the paper must focus only on first
peoples, non-citizens, or forced/voluntary immigrants.
WRITING ASSIGNMENT
Your research paper will be completed in two parts according to the schedule below. Each part of
the MMW writing assignment sequence must be completed and submitted in order to pass the
course.

PROSPECTUS and PROSPECTUS TEMPLATE
In this assignment you will write a prospectus that outlines your research project. Your
prospectus should indicate, in three pages, your Level-3 research question and working
thesis, the counterarguments that you will address, the historical and scholarly context of
your argument, and at least some of the evidence you plan to offer in support of your
