Doubling Pages: Writing Note Cards
You are required to read 1000 pages on an American History topic this semester, but you may double your
pages read by completing a series of notecards for your source. This will also help you organize the
research paper that you write spring term. The research paper requires a total of 50 notecards. Do them
now and you fulfill the requirement for next term.
1. After you complete your book, test with Mr. B. to claim your pages. Make sure you get a signature
from him.
2. Use your composition book to develop a Statement of Purpose. Bring to Mr. B for approval. (A
Statement of Purpose is a sentence that you write, which states, in some detail, what you want to
learn about in your research project. The statement guides you as you work so that you will read and
take notes only on what's needed for your project).
3. Ask Mr. B to help you develop a list of subtopics.
4. Go back into your book and make notecards for your statement of purpose. Label your notecards as
follows:
1. Write the subtopic of the note at the top of each card.
2. Write only one main point on a note card.
3. Only write information directly related to one of your research questions.
4. Write only essential words, abbreviate when possible.
5. Be accurate: double check quotes and statistics.
6. Identify direct quotes with quotation marks and the person;s name.
7. Bracket your own words [] when you add them into a quote.
8. Use ellipses points (…) where you leave out non-essential words from a quote.
9. Distinguish between ‘fact’ and ‘opinion’
10. Include the source number on the card.
11. Write the page number of the source after the note.
