The DBQ is made up of two sections: SCAFFOLDING & ESSAY
I.
SCAFFOLDING: Documents (quotes, passages, cartoons, or
pictures) are given. Students must examine the documents and
answer the questions that follow. Answers must be written in
COMPLETE SENTENCES.
TIPS FOR SCAFFOLDING QUESTIONS
1. Before beginning the scaffolding section read
the essay question.
2. As you read the documents think about the
essay question that you will be answering.
Ask yourself: “How will this document help me
to answer the essay question?”
3. Be sure to read the introduction to the
document. This may provide you with
important information such as: the title, author,
date, or context of the document.
4. Make sure to fully answer the question(s).
Many questions may require you to explain
your answer. Some questions may ask for
examples.
5. Make sure that you answer the questions
using complete sentences. You will not
receive full credit for partial sentences.
