Adding Fractions & Mixed Numbers
Let's use pictures to illustrate why we must find
common denominators in order to add fractions.

Example:

See how the slices are different sizes? We need to make them
the same before we can continue, because we can't add them
like this.
We can find a common denominator by finding the LCM and
making equivalent fractions.
Now the first fraction has
the same bottom number "6"
and our pizzas look like this
Once we have common denominators, we can add the fractions.
