Most known elements are metals. An object made from a pure metal can sometimes be
identified based on its density since every metal has a unique density. Density is a ratio
of mass divided by volume. D = M/V.
Objectives:
• Measure the mass and volume of the 6 known metal blocks using a ruler and a
balance.
• Calculate the density of each of the above samples. And record your results in
table 1 below.
• Identify the unknown irregularly shaped metal using the water displacement
method to determine its volume.
Materials:
• 7 metal samples (6 small cubes and 1 irregular shaped piece of metal).
• Balance
• 25- ml graduated cylinder
• Water
• Paper towels
Procedure:
1. Select 1 each of the 6 identified metal cubes.
2. Use the balance to measure the mass of each sample to the nearest 0.01g. Record
the masses in the data table.
3. Determine the length width and height, and determine the volume of each cube.
4. Record your results in table 1 below
