Re: Scale Installation Permit
All scale companies must notify Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce Weights and
Measures Division when there is a scale or scales being installed. All scales installed with a capacity of
ten thousand (10,000) pounds or more must apply for a Scale Installation Permit before
installation.
These are the requirements: 1) only a scale service repair company or scale service repairmen licensed by
the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce/Weights and Measures Division, may test and
calibrate a scale following installation: 2) scale installation and testing must meet applicable requirements
of NIST Handbook 44, and Mississippi Weights and Measures Laws and Regulations; and 3) scale and
scale foundation blueprints and specifications must be supplied to the Director of Weights and Measures.
The approach specifications on vehicle scales are to provide a slope of no more than two (2) inches of
drop for every 4 feet of the remaining portion of the approach. This is equivalent to ½ inch per foot of the
remaining approach. Also, inform the business of these requirements even though you are not completing
the foundation work. Please send a check or money order in the amount of fifty dollars ($50.00)
payable to the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce/Weights and Measures
Division, P. O. Box 1609, Jackson, MS 39215-1609. After approval of application and the scale
installation inspection by the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce/Weights and
Measures Division a scale installation permit will be issued.
For those of you who operate in the state of Mississippi; we require all repairmen’s weights to be
calibrated once yearly, you must have your yearly certificate available. The Weights and Measures Law
states in Section 75-27-67; any person so licensed shall, within three (3) days after he adjusts, repairs,
services, restores to service or places in service any scale, make a report thereof to the Director of
Weights and Measures on a form provided by the Department of Agriculture and Commerce.
We’ve had several instances in which the scale company repaired or installed a scale and a service report
was never received. To avoid this dilemma, you may find this service report on our website at
to the Jackson office within 3 days
and return by mail or fax (601) 359-1175
after repair.
If you have any questions, please contact our office at 601-359-1149.
