3CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT REPORT ---- Catholic Schools Office
The Archdiocese of Galveston – Houston has a moral obligation to protect and value children as Jesus
did; school personnel are mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect under provisions of Chapter 261
of the Texas Family Code.
CRITERIA FOR REPORTING CHILD ABUSE
Abuse or neglect is to be reported under the following criteria.
A report of child abuse is not an
accusation or a proven fact, and the State of Texas does not require a reporter to know or to be certain
that a child has been abused or neglected. In Texas, the degree of certainty which must be met is that
the person reporting must have “cause to believe” (Chapter 261, Texas Family Code) that abuse or
neglect has occurred or will occur. The identity of the person making the report will be kept confidential. If
the person making the report of suspected child abuse or neglect is acting in good faith and without
malice that person is immune from civil or criminal liability.
REPORTING
Report abuse or neglect to the Children’s Protective Services (CPS) immediately. Law requires a report
be made to CPS with 24 hours. The CPS number is 1-800-252-5400.You must also promptly notify the
principal of your school but do not delay a report CPS.
Submit a “Child Abuse or Neglect Report” to the Catholic Schools Office within five days. The address of
