NATIONAL DIRECT STUDENT LOAN PROGRAM
DEFERMENT OF REPAYMENT
You are eligible for deferment of repayment under the conditions listed below. During periods of deferment,
principal is not due and interest does not accrue. It is your responsibility to submit forms on time; failure to
do so will result in continued billings. If you have loans’ from more than one lending institution you must sub-
mit seperate forms for each school. Student deferment forms must be submitted at the beginning of each
academic year, semester or quarter, depending upon the requirements of the certifying school and/or your
lending institution. All other forms must be submitted at least annually.
DEFERMENT OF DEFENSE OR DIRECT LOANS MADE ON OR BEFORE 9/30/80:
1. Enrolled as at least a half-time student at an institution of higher education. __
2. A member of the U.S. Armed forces, on full-time active duty?
3. A Peace Corps Volunteer.*
4. A volunteer under the Domestic Volunteer Service Act of 1973.*
DEFERMENT OF DIRECT LOANS MADE ON OR AFTER 10/1/80:
1.
Enrolled as at least a half-time student at an institution of higher education.

A member of the U.S. Armed Forces, on full-time active duty.*

Serving an eligible internship required to begin professional practice or service.(Maximum deferment: 2
years.) There is a limited number of Department of education approved internships.

Temporarily totally disabled means “an injury or illness which prevents an individual from attend-
ing an eligible institution or to be gainfully employed for an extended period of time.” (This form
must be accompanied by an affidavit from a qualified physician.) Return the form to the lending
institution for approval.
*Maximum deferment: 3 years after expiration of the grace period.
