NOTE: A Catholic marrying a baptized non-Catholic must be married either in a Catholic church or the
church of the baptized non-Catholic. A Catholic marrying an unbaptized person may request permission to
be married in a suitable place, such as a hotel or country club. Under no circumstances is a wedding outdoors
permitted. Granted with the following understanding:
1.
All documentation, investigation and preparation which is required for all marriages is completed in advance
of the wedding.
2.
It is your obligation to see that the wedding is properly recorded in the marriage register of the parish from
which the application for this dispensation was made, and to see that all the marriage papers are properly

3.
It is your responsibility to notify the place of baptism after the wedding has taken place or to notify the
Chancery if the wedding is canceled after obtaining the dispensation.
4.
A certificate from the minister attesting to the fact that the wedding has taken place and a copy of the civil
marriage license should be obtained by you and filed with the other marriage papers.
5.
It is understood that there will be only one ceremony. If you are invited to participate in the non-Catholic
wedding service, you may do so to the extent of offering additional prayers, blessings or words of greeting
and exhortation. If the wedding is not part of the Lord's Supper or the principal liturgical service of the
Word, you may, if invited, read a lesson and/or give a homily.
6.
The Catholic party should be informed that in the event a Catholic ecclesiastical record is needed in the
future, it should be sought from the parish where the marriage papers are filed.
