Each paramedic must obtain a minimum of 60 hours of continuing education at midpoint and a total of
120 hours of continuing education at relicensure per Illinois Department of Public Health Section
535.530.
1. Didactic continuing education may be accumulated utilizing the following guidelines:
-
Mandatory continuing education sessions provided by this System must be attended in order to
meet licensure requirements.
-
Appropriate all day seminars approved by this System for hour-for-hour credit
(documentation of attendance is required).
-
Continuing education sessions offered by this System (hour-for-hour credit).
-
Other System continuing medical education approved and accredited by the Illinois Department
of Public Health with a site code for hour-for-hour credit (documentation of attendance is
required).
-
Lectures to various groups on first aid and C.P.R. classes if certified as a CPR Instructor.
-
Presentation of lecture in EMT, paramedic, or continuing education class. (Two hours credit
for each hour of lecture time-any lecture repeated in one year’s time will be individually
evaluated.)

E.R.T. and Hazardous Materials Courses
2. Field/Clinical time may be accumulated utilizing the following guidelines:
-
A maximum of 30 field/clinical hours may be accumulated in a two year time-frame.

Field time is accumulated through documentation care given on ALS calls. For each ALS
call, .25 credit will be given (4 calls = one hour). It will be the responsibility of the Department
Chief/Coordinator to document and verify their personnel’s field time. This
field time
documentation must be submitted to the EMS office on a regular basis and include the
signature of the Department Chief/Coordinator.

Eight hours can be accumulated through documented evaluation of provisional paramedics or
supervision of calls as the senior paramedic. Granted one time in each two year period.
Documentation must include verification from the Chief/Owner of the Department.

Documented practical training sessions at approved seminar workshops as well as at
departments.
-
Evaluation at EMT and/or paramedic practical sessions. (Time not to exceed four hours/year
on any one specific skill area).
-
Participating in public demonstrations which involve practical skills such as C.P.R., first aid,
blood pressure screening and babysitting classes and EMT or paramedic skills up to four
hours/year in any one of the areas defined above.

Participation in documented disaster drills.
-
Hospital clinical time in an Emergency Department not to exceed 8 hours in each two year
period.
