Lesson (Weeks 1 and 2): Introduce family terms by creating (sketching/labeling) your own
family tree starting with parents. Add siblings/extended family each day, and partners talk using
the following frames.

A ____ is a _____. (A mother is a girl. A baby owl is an owlet.)
Lesson (Week 3):
1. Model and discuss adjectives and how to use sentence frames. (See chart below)
2. Break into groups by using 4-Corners strategy. Have the 4-Corners of the classroom labeled
brothers, sisters, both, only child.
3. 4-Corners: If you only have brothers, stand by the Brother poster. If you only have sisters,
stand by the Sister poster. If you have both brothers and sisters, stand by the Both poster. If you
are an only child, stand by the poster that says Only Child. Count and/or graph the number of
students in each group.
4. As a whole group, model asking and answering questions as a partnership. Then, partner up
to ask and answer, “Who is in your family?”
