Instructions
To win The Jungle Game (or Dou Shou Qi), you can either move one of your pieces to the Den square (
) or
capture all of your opponent’s pieces.
1. Cut out the pieces and place them on the corresponding squares (after the game begins, those squares
have no special meaning.) The Den square is in the center of the first row on either side of the board. It
陷阱
is surrounded by three Trap squares (
). The twelve squares with wavy lines are two rivers and the
white squares are dry land.
2. Red moves first. Afterwards, players alternate turns. Each piece can move one square per turn. Pieces
can move vertically or horizontally, but not diagonally. Pieces may not rest on their own Den.
3. Players capture each other’s pieces by moving a piece onto the square occupied by an animal with the
same rank or lower (except for the rat, which can capture the elephant, and the elephant, which cannot
capture the rat.) Pieces that are on the Trap squares can be captured by any animal, regardless of rank.
4. Only rats may land in the water squares. Rats may not make any captures directly from the water to the
land. Lions and tigers may jump vertically or horizontally across the rivers to the next adjacent land
square. The jump may result in a capture.
