Multiplying Fractions Word Problems #1
1. A dime is 1/2 inch wide. If you put 5 dimes end to end, how long would
they be from beginning to end?
Answer:
1/2 x 5/1 = 5/2. Divide 5 ÷ 2 to get 2 remainder 1, which is 2 ½.
They would be 2 ½ inches long.
2. You have 10 cookies and want to give 1/2 of them to a friend. How
many do you give to your friend?
Answer:
10/1 x 1/2 = 10/2. Divide 10 ÷ 2 to get 5.
You give 5 cookies to your friend.
3. You have 8 donuts and you want to give 1/4 of them to a friend. How
many donuts would your friend get?
Answer:
8/1 x 1/4 = 8/4. Divide 8 ÷ 4 to get 2.
Your friend gets 2 donuts.
4. You have 6 donuts and you want to give 2/3 of them to a friend and
keep the rest for yourself. How many donuts would your friend get?
Answer:
6/1 x 2/3 = 12/3. Divide 12 ÷ 3 to get 4.
Your friend gets 4 donuts.
5. Five friends buy a package of 12 cookies and want to share them
equally. Each friend will get 1/5 of the cookies. How much will each
friend get?
Answer:
12/1 x 1/5 = 12/5. Divide 12 ÷ 5 to get 2 remainder 2, which is 2 2/5.
Each friend gets 2 2/5 cookies.
