North Carolina State Horse: Colonial Spanish Mustang
The Colonial Spanish Mustang was adopted by the North Carolina General
Assembly as the Official State Horse of North Carolina in 2010. The horses have
lived for more than four centuries on the coast of North Carolina and are believed
to have descended from a breed used by Spanish Conquistadores. Today the
horses live on Shackleford Banks on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and they
are protected by federal law.
