Your Stetson/Resistol Hat Fit
For the hat that will hold up the best, hat manufacturers use an "X" rating. This determines the amount of animal felt used to make
the hat. The higher the "X" rating, the better quality of hat (ex. 2X, 3X, 4X, etc.) The actual Cavalry Stetson is a 3X hat. For your
size, your hat should fit snug, not tight, and it should sit level across your forehead, with approximately an inch (2.5-cm) above
your eyebrows and a finger width above your ears.
Getting the right size
When selecting your hat size, measuring your head will provide the most accurate results. Don’t use your patrol cap, beret, ICH,
ball cap, or beanie as a reference. Different hat manufacturers result in slightly different sizes, just like with shoes.
To find your size, hold a cloth tape measure just above your ear. Wrap the tape measure around your
head and across your forehead—make it tight (snug), but not uncomfortable. If you don’t have a
flexible tape measure, you can use a piece of string, then measure the length against a ruler. The fit of
your hat is only as good as the measurement that you provide us with, so ensure that your
measurement is accurate—measure twice!
If you are uncertain about the exact size or if you are between sizes, always go with the next
size up. Hats that are too tight can be stretched (try one of our Hat Stretchers). We also carry
sizing tape and removable hat inserts to adjust hats that are too big.
For the best looking hat for your head, we suggest that the crown of your hat is the same
height (brim to top of crown) as your face (brim to bottom of chin) and the brim width be
proportional to your face width. People of average to large body types can wear 3 1/2" to 4"
brims while smaller body types should consider wearing hats with brims of 3” to 3 1/2".
