Who was Maria Sibylla Merian?

Maria Sibylla Merian (German, 1647-1717) was an

entomologist, botanist, naturalist and artist. She

illustrated insects, their habitat and food sources,

and the process of metamorphosis. Because of her

careful observation and documentation in her book

Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, Merian

is considered to be a significant contributor to the

field of entomology (the study of insects).
