Dear Family Member or Friend:
This activity book was created to teach young children the importance
of fire safety. However, they will need your help in making their home more
fire safe.
The activity book emphasizes the following important fire safety
messages:
• Many home fires occur from children playing with ignition sources.
These include matches, lighters, candles, and other sources of fire
and flame. Encourage children to notify an adult when they discover
these objects.
• A working smoke alarm alerts a family to get out of the home. Teach
children about the beeping sound an alarm makes when it smells
smoke. Encourage children to get out if the alarm beeps.
• Children often find firefighters to be scary when they are dressed in
their turnout gear. Young children are often killed or injured because
they hide from fire or a firefighter. Invite firefighters from your local
department to visit classrooms and wear their gear.
• The best place for a smoke alarm is near the family sleeping area.
Ask children where smoke alarms are located in their homes.
• A written and practiced fire escape plan ensures that a family will
know what to do in the event their home catches on fire. Encourage
families to practice a fire escape drill at least two times a year and
designate a safe meeting place.
Children are recognized as a Junior Fire Marshal after completing this
book. Help them in their new role by reinforcing the above fire safety
messages.
