West Indian Manatee
This gentle animal lives in the coastal
In what states is this species found?
waters of Georgia, Florida, Texas, and
Puerto Rico. It is about 10 feet long
and can weigh up to 2,000 pounds — as
much as a car! Manatees are
herbivores (meaning they eat only
plants). After eating they may swim
to the bottom of the water and rest.
Manatees can hold their breath for up
to 12 minutes at a time!
