PLAGIARISM
Please note that any plagiarism detected as part of your work will result in a lowering of your assignment mark and likely
disciplinary action by the College.
DEFINITION OF PLAGIRISM
“According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, to ‘plagiarise’ means: to steam and pass off (the ideas or words of
another) as one’s own.
• to use (another’s production) without crediting the source
• to commit literary theft
• to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.
In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else’s work and lying about it afterwards.
All of the following are considered plagiarism; if not referenced properly:
• turning in someone else’s work as your own
• for example: any lists or ideas you obtain from any publication or website. Even if you
change the words around, they are still another person’s ideas!
• copying words or ideas from someone else
• for example: images from any publication or website, without permission from the publisher
• failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
• for example: words in the same format and order should be put in quotation marks and the
reference includes the page number (in brackets).
• giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
• for example: if the idea is referenced from another source, you need to cite that you read
this
idea in the publication, ‘as cited from’ ... then put the original author and publication
details
• changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
• for example: copying a list of items, but changing the order of the words without
referencing the source, is still plagiarism
• copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether
you give
credit or not
• for example: if more than 10% of your assignment is within quotation marks, it cannot
realistically be considered your own work.
Most cases of plagiarism can be avoided by citing sources. Simply acknowledging that certain material has been borrowed, and
providing your audience with the information necessary to find that source, is usually enough to prevent plagiarism.”
