Greetings, Family!
In our next unit, “Magnets and Electromagnetism,” our science class
will be studying magnets and how they work. We will explore the
kinds of materials that magnets attract and how magnets interact with
each other. Students will learn about how navigational compasses rely
on magnetism to work. Students will also explore the relationship be-
tween electricity and magnetism, and build their own working electro-
magnet. They will also research the role of electromagnets in everyday
devices such as telephones, speakers, and doorbells.
You can make science come alive for your child in and around your
home. Help students identify what devices in your home make use of
magnets to operate. How are the magnets used in the device? Does
the device also use electricity? You can also have your child look in
magazines or newspapers, and watch the news, for stories about
magnets and devices that use magnets to work.
For the hands-on activities in this module, we are collecting the
items listed below. Can you donate any of these items? If so, we need
