800 minutes of Reading

Dear BCE Families,

As you know, Big Cypress Elementary School and the PTA are sponsoring a school-wide summer reading

challenge. Students in K-4 have just received their book to “kick off” the BCE Summer Reading Challenge. We

are encouraging students to read the book and complete an activity from the back side of this note. In

addition, we are challenging each child to read 800 minutes during the school vacation. The best way to

prevent the summer reading slide is to read and read some more. Reading is like everything else, if you want

to improve, you need to practice! Hopefully, you have already signed and returned the reading contract that

was recently sent home. If not, you may download the contract from the school website and return it to school

as soon as possible.

When we return to school in August, there will be a special breakfast award celebration. This celebration will

be for the students reading the 800 minutes and their parents. Prizes will also be awarded to students

reaching the reading levels stated below. In order to participate, students need to return their reading logs to

school by August 19, 2016 along with their completed activity.

Prize levels:

1. Read the book and did the activity

2. 200 minutes of reading / book and activity

3. 400 minutes of reading / book and activity

4. 600 minutes of reading / book and activity

5. 800 minutes of reading/book and activity

All the summer reading information, resources and logs are available on the school website. Help your child

maintain the reading progress they have made during this school year. Encourage them to be a Reading

Superhero daily!
