TEKS Student Expectation:
The student is expected to convert measures within the same measurement system (customary
and metric) based on relationships between units (6.8D)

Activity: Today we will make a diagram of a gallon to help you solve problems. The diagram will
help you solve problems involving the relationships between a gallon, quart, pint and cup.
4. The teacher says:
Where can I find how many quarts are in a gallon? (TAKS mathematics chart)
How many quarts are in a gallon? (4 quarts)
How many pints are in a quart? (2 pints)
How many cups are in a pint? (2 cups)
How many fluid ounces in a cup? (8 ounces)

5. The teacher gives each student a blank sheet of paper and says:
Let’s use the mathematics chart to make a diagram for converting between liquid
measures.
Using your TAKS mathematics chart, what is the largest unit of liquid measure? (gallon)
How do you know?
Since the gallon is the largest unit, let’s make a large G on our paper. (Use the sample
page to see the size needed for the G.)
Using your TAKS math chart, what information can I find about the size of a gallon in terms
of quarts? (It is equal to 4 quarts.)
Since 4 quarts is equivalent to one gallon, let’s record this information inside the big G
using the letter Q to represent each quart. (See sample).
