In this way we can find the difference between any positive and negative numbers:
Subtraction: 8 – (+3) = ?
Subtraction: –8 – (+3) = ?
Add the opposite: 8 + (–3) = 5
Add the opposite: –8 + (–3) = –11
Subtraction: 8 – (–3) = ?
Subtraction: –8 – (–3) = ?
Add the opposite: 8 + (+3) = 11
Add the opposite: –8 + (+3) = –5
Change each subtraction to adding the opposite. Then combine integers as usual. The first one
shows you how.
