Process:
When a word problem involves a constant rate of change and a
beginning amount, it can be written in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b. To do this,
recognize which number will be used to represent the slope, m, and which number
will be used to represent the y-intercept, b.
Examples
1. An airplane 30,000 feet above ground begins descending at a rate of 2,000
feet per minute. Assume the plane continues at the same rate of descent. The
plane’s height and minutes above ground are related to each other.
a. Identify the variables in this situation. What does x represent? What
does y represent?
b. What is the given information in the problem? (find all that apply)
i. y-intercept:
ii. Slope:
iii. One point:
iv. Second point:
c. Write an equation to model the situation.
d. Use your equation to find the altitude of the plane after five minutes.
