LESSON 2: CONVERSIONS BETWEEN SYSTEMS
Lesson Introduction
This lesson deals with converting metric values to imperial values, and basic imperial values to
metric values.
CHANGING FROM METRIC TO IMPERIAL MEASUREMENTS
Canada didn’t always use the metric system. In 1970 the federal government decided that
Canada would adopt the metric system. Before that time, the imperial system was used.
Generally, Canada still uses some imperial units. For example, when someone asks how tall you
are you are likely to answer in feet and inches instead of metres or centimetres.
Basic Conversion Formulas between Systems
Length
1 miles = 1.61 km
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 metre = 1.094 yds
1 foot = 30.28 cm
Capacity
1 gallon = 4.54 L
1 L = 1.06 quarts
1 L = 4.32 cups
1 fl. oz. = 28.41 mL
1 cup = 250 mL
1 tbsp = 15 mL
1 tsp = 5 mL
Mass
1 ton = 2000 lb
1 kg = 2.2 lbs
1 lb = 454 g = 0.454 kg
1 oz = 28.4 g
