Read the passage below and answer questions 1 through 5.
Mary Lewis was a pioneer in the field of education in the South. After graduating
from Atlanta University, Mary spent ten years teaching in one of the few public high
schools for African Americans. There were practically no high schools for African
Americans. Therefore, Mary Lewis knew how difficult it was for African American
children to prepare for college. In 1886, when the Board of Missions for Freed Men
invited her to start a private secondary school in Augusta, she gladly accepted.
The Whylsy Institute, as Mary’s school was called, soon outgrew the church
lecture room where it had begun. It had to move to larger quarters. In addition to
handling the curriculum, Mary also had to raise money to finance the school. Despite the
difficulties, she succeeded in her goal to make her students as educated as white high
school graduates. The Whylsy Institute came to be recognized as one of the best
secondary schools in Georgia.
