Atomic Radius And Atomic Number Worksheet

Atomic Radius vs. Atomic Number
The radius of atoms is measurable and predictable. The size of atoms depends on the number of occupied
energy levels and the strength of attraction that the nucleus has for its electrons. Since electrons all have a
negative charge, they should repel each other, but since protons have a positive charge, there is an attraction of
the electrons toward the nucleus where protons are found. Using this information, what do you predict will
happen to the size of atoms as you
a) go across a period? __________________________________________________________________________
b) go down a family? _______________________________________________
Using the data in the chart, make a line graph of the radius vs. the atomic number. Then follow the directions in
-9
marking the graph. (The radius unit is nanometers, 10
meter)

lonization Energy vs. Atomic Number
Ions form by the loss or gain of electrons. lonization energy is the energy needed to remove the most loosely
held valence electron from the atom (to make the atom a +1 ion). The following table has the ionization
energies of the first 54 elements. Graph the data and then compare it to the atomic radius.
