Kelvin Scale
Another unit of measure for temperature is the Kelvin. This temperature scale is an extension of the
Celsius scale (°C). It is symbolized using K (not °K), and is used frequently in physics and chemistry.
Kelvin does not have negative numbers; i.e., it begins at absolute zero, at which there is complete
absence of heat energy.

To convert between Celsius (°C) and Kelvin (K) measurements and to convert between Fahrenheit
(°F) and Kelvin (K), use the conversion tables below.
Conversion Table
(°F – 32)
K = °C + 273.15
°C to K
°F to K
K = =
+ 273.15

°C = K – 273.15
°F = 1.8(K – 273.15) + 32

Converting Between the Celsius (°C) Scale and the Kelvin (K) Scale
Convert the following:
(i)
25°C to Kelvin (ii)
300 K to Celsius (iii) 75°F to Kelvin (K) (iv)
350 K to Fahrenheit (°F)
(i)
25°C to Kelvin:
(ii)
300 K to Celsius:
Solution
K = °C + 273.15
°C = K – 273.15
= 25 + 273.15
= 300 – 273.15
= 298.15 K
= 26.85 °C
Therefore, 25°C is equal to 298.15 K.
Therefore, 300 K is equal to 26.85 °C.
(iii) 75°F to Kelvin (K):
(iv)
350 K to Fahrenheit (°F):

Therefore, 350 K is equal to 170.33 °F.
1.80
= 23.888888... + 273.15
= 297.038888... = 297.04 K
Therefore, 75°F is equal to 297.04 K.
