Exodus – Study 7.
The plagues represent the working of God’s purpose and will through the created order. Some try to explain
away the miraculous dimension of the plagues, by presenting evidence that they are natural events that occur
spontaneously and do not come from the hand of God. They miss the point. God exercises sovereignty over
all his creation, he can use nature and natural forces in either a natural and expected way or in an unnatural
and unexpected way, to achieve his divine purpose. Other sections of Scripture refer to these plagues as
actual historical facts, God’s saving activity in the life and history of Israel, not simply unconnected
spontaneous natural events. Just before they entered the promised land, Moses reminded the Israelites of
the ‘miraculous signs and wonders’, the ‘great and awesome deeds’ that the Lord did for them in Egypt
(Deuteronomy 4:34). Jeremiah reminded 7th century Israel that the Lord ‘performed miraculous signs and
wonders in Egypt’ (Jeremiah 32:20). Two of the Psalms, 78 and 105, deal with the plagues as historical
events which God performed in the life of Israel. Psalm 78 lists seven of the ten plagues, Psalm 105 lists
eight.
The plagues testify to the power and redemptive action of God and provide evidence that nothing is too hard
for God, not even the deliverance of a weak and enslaved people from out of bondage and subjugation to a
mighty and powerful nation. The plagues were more than just important in freeing Israel from Egypt, they
provided a continuing reassurance of God’s power, giving the people of Israel confidence, not just for the
generation that experienced them first hand, but also for the generations that followed.
