Instructions for Conversion Problems
For every conversion problem
Write the number in the problem down with unit and a multiplication sign
Decide which conversion factor you should use, Avagadro’s or molar mass.
Use your index card to determine which way you should use your conversion factor.
Then write the conversion factor down next to the multiplication sign.
Make sure your units cancel and you have the unit you’re solving for on top.
Remember all numbers must have units.
Cancel your units then solve the problem. You should enter the numbers in your
calculator just as you see them on your paper. The number you are given in the problem
always goes first.
If you have an exponent don’t forget to use the 2
nd
, button. This takes the place of the
x10. So on your calculator it should read, 6.02E23.
Then put your answer down in proper sig. figs and unit. Don’t forget to look to see if
there is an E at the end.
Calculating Molar Mass of a Compound
Remember to determine the molar mass of an element you look at the periodic table. We
will only use 3 sig figs…. If more than 3, round to proper number.
If you have a compound, need to
1.
write down each element in the compound in a column.
2.
Next to the element write the number of each element. If you have a parentheses
you must multiply the numbers inside by the one outside.
3.
Next to the number of each element, write a multiplication sign (x).
4.
Look up mass of each element on the periodic table and write it next to the times
sign.
5.
Place an = sign next to the mass of each element.
6.
Multiply the number of each element by its mass and write the number next to the
= sign.
7.
Go to the last column and add the masses. This is your molar mass of a
compound.
Sometimes, you will need to use both factors to convert. Remember the Chemistry two-
step. You just have to go from grams to mole then to particles or vise versa.
