Chemical Formulas
Empirical Formulas
simplest formula for a compound;
gives the types of atoms present and their relative
Chemical Formula
– a symbolic representation designed to
numbers.
indicate (at a minimum) the elements present and the relative
number of atoms of each element.
Molecular Formulas
based on an actual (existing)
molecules.
Empirical and molecular formulas give no info on how
the atoms are attached to each other.
Three kinds of chemical formulas
1)Empirical Formula
Structural Formulas –
shows the order in which atoms are
2)Molecular Formula
bonded together in a molecule and what types of bonds.
3)Structural Formula
There are different types of structural formulas.
