Sweatlodge Information
Each participant prior to the final decision to participate in the sweatlodge ceremony and prior to
signing the informed consent agreement must read the following information.
If you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, do not sweat. If you have any physical
health needs such as a puffer for asthma or orange juice for hypoglycemia, etc. please let the
sweat leader know before the ceremony and give them your health needs to keep handy for you
during the ceremony.
Several minutes before the ceremony begins you will be asked to prepare. Go to the
restroom, undress, wrap in your blanket or towel, remove all jewelry, hair ties, and contact
lenses. You may wear glasses down to the circle and place them on the altar when you enter.
A blessing bowl will be available on the altar for any jewelry you want blessed by the energy of
the ceremony. Put all other belongings in a bag. Once you are ready, sit quietly alone to
introspect and reflect on the work you are about to do. Come quietly to the circle when the
sweaters are called for. Medicine begins when the medicine is ready, not according to the
clock. This helps ensure your safety and the sacredness of the ceremony.
Stand at the entrance of the circle and wait for the fire keeper to connect you to the fire
and tell you that you may enter. Take some tobacco and give it to the fire. You may make a
prayer at the fire if you choose but do not stand between the fire keeper and the fire if you do
so. Make a complete clockwise circle around the fire and enter the lodge. Go clockwise around
the center pit within the lodge.
At any time during a round you may call “Fire keeper, I go out.” The fire keeper will open
the door. Exit clockwise, holding people’s hands or sweatlodge sides to be sure to stay well
back from the hot rocks and to support yourself in case you are dizzy or disoriented. Be sure to
speak up if you need help because you are dizzy or unsteady. There will also be opportunity to
leave the lodge between rounds. You may reenter the lodge when the door is opened again.
Try to exit with other people or when the door is open for breath, if possible, to prevent the door
from having to be opened too frequently and interrupting the flow of energy.
You may not leave the circle during the ceremony. If you need to urinate you may go
around behind the back of the lodge.
When you are finished with your work within the lodge you call our “Fire Keeper, All My
Relations.” This indicates to the sweat leader and fire keeper that you will not be returning to
the lodge. You may then sit out by the fire until the ceremony is over.
You may call for drinking water or cold towels while in the lodge. Do not drink too much
or you may cause vomiting. Drinking water and cold towels are also available outside around
the fire. If you are too hot or are having difficulty breathing inside the lodge lean or lie down with
your face near the ground.
Stay focused on your own work, do not listen or respond to anyone in the lodge other
than the two medicine people within the lodge. Do not sit next to family members or close
friends. Do not touch anyone in the lodge as it may interrupt their process or be threatening to
them while in some processes. You may hold out your hand to support people entering or
