Music Comparison Paper

According to Luther, “Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest

praise. The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that

he should proclaim the Word of God through music.”

Music is a key part of our participation in worship. Through this project, you will

explore the role of music in worship.

1. Select two hymns out of the Lutheran Service Book.

2. Select two songs considered to be “contemporary praise songs”.

3. Examine the lyrics of both forms of music and write a paper using the

following questions as a guide:

a. What or who is the main focus of this song/hymn?

b. When a person sings this music what exactly is he/she doing? What

is really going on in this music?

c. What are the Biblical foundations of this music?

4. Requirements of the paper:

a. The paper should have the lyrics of each song/hymn printed out on

no more than half of a page. The songs themselves should be single

spaced, while the commentary on the songs should be double

spaced.

b. The paper should be no longer than eight pages long; Times New

Roman size 12 font.

c. The paper should employ a Law/Gospel perspective.

i. The Law tells us what is required of us, and points to our own

actions.

ii. The Gospel points to what Christ has done for us, and

emphasizes the grace we have through Him.
