One of the qualities of a learner is to be open minded. Open-minded students understand
and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories and are open to the perspectives,
values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are interested in other
points of view and are willing to grow from the experience. Keep this in mind as you read
The Cay
. Pay attention to the characters Phillip and Timothy throughout the story. Do you
think they are open-minded? Be prepared to discuss them when you come to class.
Choose one
of the following to complete for your summer project:
Project 1 : Diorama
. Using a shoebox or other small box without a lid or flaps, create a
scene from the story. Make sure you include details in your scene that are important to
the story.
After creating the scene, write a paragraph describing the scene you chose, explain the
details you include, and glue this paragraph to the back of the box. Your name should be on
this paragraph paper.
Project 2: Island map
. Draw a map of the island based on the descriptions in the book. Be
sure to include everything that you know about the island before the hurricane hit. Also
include things that Timothy and Philip built. This map should be colorful and well-labeled,
with a map key. After you have created the map, write a paragraph about the map explain
the details you include, and glue this paragraph to the back of the map. Place your name in
the bottom right hand corner of the map front.
