Summer Reading at JJ Daniell Middle School
How Much/How Long Should I Read?
Daniell students are expected to read independently for at least 20 minutes each day. By the
end of the summer, a student should have read at least 3-5 books within his/her Lexile range.
What Should I Read?
Students may select any author/book deemed appropriate for the student’s age and/or Lexile
level. In addition to literary (fiction) works, informational texts such as biographies,
autobiographies, memoirs, etc. are acceptable and encouraged. Please visit the CCSD Summer
Reading Website or your local Cobb County Public Library for suggested book lists if needed.
How Should I Document My Reading?
All students have been provided with a username and password for the Scholastic Summer
Reading Challenge. Students should log their reading minutes on the Scholastic website or on
the provided reading log. Please visit the Cobb Summer Reading website for further information
about the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge.
How Is Summer Reading Assessed?
Within the first few weeks of school, Language Arts teachers will collect paper reading logs
and/or monitor the online Scholastic logs. Your LA teacher may assign a written or performance-
based assignment or project based on your summer reading. Failure to complete summer
reading may hinder your performance on these assignments. Additionally, students who
participate in the Scholastic Summer Reading Program will be recognized at a special event once
school starts. More information about the assessment of summer reading will be provided at the
beginning of the school year.
