1. Preview your book. What questions do you have before reading?
2. Paraphrase the part of the book/chapter that you just read.
3. Tell about a connection you had while reading. How does your connection help you
better understand the text or character?
4. What is a prediction you have while reading? What is the text evidence (clues from the
story) that caused you to make that prediction?
5. What is a word that was difficult for you? What do you think the word means? What
words or phrases helped you figure out what the word means (context clues)?
6. Use a dictionary to look up with a word means that was difficult for you. Remember to
choose the definition that best fits your story.
If your child reads poetry during his/her reading time, you can ask the following questions:
1. What is the poem mostly about?
2. Which two words or lines in the poem rhyme? How do you know?
3. Is the poem a free verse or lyrical poem? Explain how you know.
4. What is the stanza mostly about?
