Ways to Respond to Books
Choose ONE idea for each response. Your response needs to be a DETAILED and well
thought out paragraph.
1. Explain any connections you made while reading.
2. Describe your favorite part and explain why it was your favorite part.
3. Predict what will happen next.
4. Tell about the things you like or dislike about a character or event.
5. Ask questions. Keep a list of questions you have before, during, and after reading. When
you are finished reading for the day, go back and see how many of your questions you can
answer.
6. Read like a writer! Identify some neat words or phrases at the author uses.
7. Determine importance - list key words, key phrases, and key ideas while you read. Choose
the most important ones from your list to help you write a summary.
8. Describe the "movie" that you created in your mind while you were reading. List some of
the author's words that caused you to create the "movie." draw a picture of the "movie."
9. Be a critic! Tell who you would recommend this book, poem, or article to and explain why.

Description
Autobiography
The story of a real person’s life, written by that person.
Biography
The story of a real person’s life, written by another person.
Fantasy
A story that includes elements that are impossible, such as talking animals
and magical powers.
Historical Fiction
A fictional story that takes place during events that really happened and
may include some characters that were real people.
Informational
Texts that provide factual information about a variety of topics such as
astronomy, geography, history, careers, travel, sports, weather, etc.
Mystery or
A suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not resolved until the
Adventure
end of the story.
Poetry
Poetry is verse written to create a response of thoughts and feelings in
the reader. It often uses rhyme and rhythm.
Realistic Fiction
A story about fictional characters that could happen in real life.
Science Fiction
A type of fantasy that uses science and technology, such as robots,
machines, and space ships.
Traditional
Stories that are passed down from one generation to the next. This

includes folk tales, legends, tall tales, and myths.
