Questions for any text your child reads:
1. What is a word that was difficult for you? What do you think the word means? What
words or phrases helped you figure out what the word means (context clues)?
2. Paraphrase the part of the text that you just read.
If your child reads nonfiction texts during his/her reading time, you can ask the following
questions:
1. What is the article/book mostly about?
2. What is the main idea of the text you read?
3. What is an example of a cause and effect in the text?
If your child reads fiction texts during his/her reading time, you can ask the following questions:
1. Who is the narrator of the story? Explain how you know?
2. Tell the story across a story mountain. Be sure to tell the characters, setting, main
problem, turning point/climax, resolution, and conclusion.
3. What is the theme (main message) of the story?
4. What is a lesson we can learn from the story?
5. What character traits can you use to describe the main character? Use text evidence to
support your thinking.
6. How has the character changed in the story? Use text evidence to support your
thinking.
