2013 Judicial Appreciation Award Nominations
King County Washington Women Lawyers (KCWWL) invites you to nominate an individual for one of our four
annual awards: Honorable Betty B. Fletcher Judge of the Year Award, President’s Award, Vanguard Award, and
Special Contribution to the Judiciary Award. These awards will be given at our Judicial Appreciation Luncheon

scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, 2013 from 11:30 – 1:15 p.m. at The Arctic Club Hotel, 700 3
Avenue, Seattle,
WA.
Nominations must be RECEIVED by May 13, 2013, to be considered.
Judge of the Year Award - This award is for an overall great judge who has fostered or improved the treatment or
position of women and other minorities in the legal system. Past recipients include Judge Helen Halpert (2001),
Judge H. Joseph Coleman (2002), Judge Joan DuBuque, Judge Faye C. Kennedy (2004), Judge Michael
Spearman (2005), Judge Tom Chambers (2006), Judge Ronald E. Cox (2007), Judge Marsha J. Pechman
(2008), Justice Mary Fairhurst (2009), Judge Robert Lasnik (2010), The Honorable Commissioners of the King
County Superior Court (2011), and Magistrate Judge Mary Alice Theiler (2012).
Vanguard Award - This award is for a judge at the forefront of a movement or issue. Past recipients include Justice
Barbara A. Madsen, for her work on the Washington State Supreme Court’s Commission on Gender and Justice
(2002), Judge Patricia Clark, for her continuing work on complex issues facing King County Juvenile Court (2003),
Judge Deborah D. Fleck, for her work on the Race and Justice Initiative and The Trial Court Funding Initiative
(2004), Judge Glenna Hall, for her dedication to issues affecting families in the judicial system (2005), Judge Laura
Inveen, for her work protecting the rights of minorities and children (2006), Judge Monica Benton for her dedicated
mentoring of young women and minority attorneys (2007), Judge Kimberley Prochnau for her many initiatives to
assist the poor, elderly, and pro se litigants (2008), Judge Steven Gonzalez for his work addressing the civil legal aid
crisis (2009), Chief Judge Marywave Van Deren for her work to improve services to those involved in family law
and guardianship cases (2010), Judge Jean A. Rietschel (2011) for her work in protecting the rights of lesbians
losing their children in custody disputes based solely on their sexual orientation, and Judge Zulema Hinojos-Fall
(2012) for her work in promoting and championing professional development and opportunities for attorneys of color.
President’s Award - Presented to a woman whose success story is a testament to the rewards of hard work and
determination. Past recipients include Tamera Soukup, Assistant Seattle City Attorney (2003), Ada Shen-Jaffe,
Columbia Legal Services (2004), Kellye Testy, Dean of Seattle University School of Law (2005), Eileen Concannon
(2006), Principal, Riddell Williams P.S., Alice Paine (2007), Executive Director of the King County Bar Association,
Judge Ann Schindler (2008), Judge Anne Levinson (ret.) (2009), Judge Ricardo Martinez (2010), Judge Paris
K. Kallas (2011), and Judge Catherine Shaffer (2012).
Award for Special Contribution to the Judiciary - Presented for outstanding contributions to making our judicial
system more accessible to all women, regardless of economic status. This award can go to a non-lawyer. Past
recipients include Martha Cohen, Director of Interpreter Services at King County Superior Court (2003), Pat
Arthur, for her work in promoting access to legal services for institutionalized people (2004), Sudha Shetty, for her
work advocating for women and minorities (2005), June Krumpotick (2006), for her work in promoting access to
justice for women through the Northwest Women’s Law Center, Attorney General Rob McKenna (2007) for his
commitment to the eradication of domestic violence, Nancy Sapiro for her work fighting for comprehensive sex
education and against pharmacy refusals (2008), Ann Benson for her tireless work for immigrant rights (2009),
Professor Jacqueline McMurtrie for founding and continued work with the Innocence Project Northwest (IPNW)
Clinic (2010), Salvador A. Mungia for his work in protecting the rights of those with the least access to legal
assistance, and Councilmember Larry Gossett (2012) for his work with programs that help inner-city youth and
reduce racial and class disparities in our local criminal justice system.
